General Ultrasound

General Ultrasound

General ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive diagnostic imaging method that does not use X-rays. It is a routine test in periodic health check-ups, helping to quickly assess the condition of many internal organs in a single examination.

What does a general ultrasound examine?

  • General abdominal ultrasound: liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and urinary tract.
  • Thyroid, breast, prostate, scrotum as indicated.
  • Soft tissue and other internal organs when further assessment is needed.

General ultrasound helps detect abnormalities such as fatty liver, gallstones, kidney stones, kidney cysts, thyroid nodules… and supports the monitoring of chronic conditions.

When should you have a general ultrasound?

You should have a general ultrasound when:

  • Having an annual periodic health check-up.
  • Having symptoms of abdominal pain, digestive disorders, painful urination, or blood in the urine.
  • Needing to monitor a known liver, gallbladder or kidney condition.
  • Having risk factors such as heavy alcohol consumption, obesity or diabetes.

Preparation before the ultrasound

Depending on the area to be examined, you may need to fast for 6 hours (abdominal ultrasound) or hold your urine (urinary tract ultrasound). For thyroid and breast ultrasound, no special preparation is required.
